Overview
Beckman Scholars will receive a scholarship of up to $21K over two summers (two ten-week intensive research programs in the summers) and the intervening academic year.
In addition to support for research, the scholarship supports attendance at professional meetings including the national Beckman Scholars Program Symposium at the Beckman Foundation (August of each year, location TBD).
In addition to their research responsibilities, scholars will also participate in activities designed to enrich their development as students and scientists throughout their tenure, including the Spring quarter "Practice of Science" course (Phys16) and academic year seminar "Science for the Common Good" (MCDB 194KF), where participants will receive 1-2 units of credit each quarter. These seminars will help prepare Beckman Scholars to deepen their understanding of research careers, build communication skills, and establish valuable connections that will support them as they embark on their own research careers.
During their tenure, Beckman Scholars will have many opportunities to present their research in research talks and posters during the summer programs and at national meetings, and Scholars should work with their research mentors to prepare publication(s) for peer-reviewed journals.
